Today, we’re diving into the wonderful world of multigenerational shoots with the Saxon family. Trust me, these sessions are a blast and super rewarding.
So, the Saxon family booked this amazing session, and it includes Haley, her mom, her grandma, her husband, and their adorable daughter Millie. It’s a full house, and we’re here to show you how we handle a multigenerational shoot. Let’s jump right in!
Setting Up for Success
For this session, we’re working with a mini session format. These are 20 minutes long, with a 10-minute buffer in between. It’s the perfect length, especially for little ones like Millie who can get tuckered out quickly. We used to do 30-minute sessions with a 15-minute buffer, but it was just too much. Now, 20 minutes is just right for capturing all the essentials without anyone getting too tired or bored.
We release our mini sessions well in advance, so families have plenty of time to plan. Our schedule runs from February through November, with sessions released the December prior. This way, everyone has ample time to get their outfits ready and book their spots.
Capturing the Moments
During the shoot, it’s all about getting everyone comfortable and having fun. We start with some relaxed, candid shots to get everyone warmed up. Then, we move on to specific combinations – like just the moms, just the grandparents, or the entire family together. The key is to keep it dynamic and move around to different spots to keep things fresh.
The Saxons have been longtime clients, and it’s always a joy to work with them. This session was particularly special because it was booked for Mother’s Day, making it a perfect gift for Haley’s mom and grandma. We focused on capturing moments that they would cherish, like three generations together and some sweet solo shots of grandma and mom with Millie.
Why We Love Multigenerational Shoots
One of the best parts about multigenerational shoots is the variety of photos you get. Different people have different preferences, which means there’s a higher chance of selling more prints. Grandma might want a special photo of just her with her daughter, while Hayley might want a family shot for their living room. This variety leads to more purchasing opportunities and a wider range of beautiful moments captured.
